Autumn Leaf Hair Face
I originally tried this activity with my own toddler and loved how creative and engaging it was. I then introduced it in my ESL classes for children, and it has been a hit every time! This simple, child-friendly craft is perfect for practising vocabulary while having fun with autumn leaves, and it works wonderfully both at home and in any classroom setting.

Objective:
Students will practice vocabulary related to the face, hair, and autumn while creating a seasonal craft.
Materials:
- Printed outline of a face (top of head missing)
- Autumn leaves (real or paper cut-outs)
- Glue sticks or liquid glue
- Crayons or paints
Vocabulary to practice:
- Body parts: head, face, eyes, nose, mouth, hair
- Craft words: glue, stick, colour/paint
- Autumn words: leaf, leaves, autumn colours (red, yellow, orange, brown, etc.)
- Extra: tree, branch, collect, pick
Steps:
- Collect leaves: Children gather autumn leaves from outside or select from a prepared pile.
- Colour the face: Using crayons or paint, they can lightly colour the face (cheeks, lips, eyes) to make it more personal.
- Add leaves as hair: Glue the leaves to the top of the head to create “autumn hair.” Encourage layering for a fun texture effect.
- Label vocabulary: You can ask students to name the parts of the face and the leaves as they work.
Language focus:
- Speaking: “I glue the leaves to the head.”
- Describing: “The hair is red and yellow.”
- Question practice: “Where is the nose?” “What colour is your hair?”
