English Tenses: When to Use Each One

(A simple guide)


PRESENT TENSES

1. Present Simple

Use for:

  • habits & routines (I wake up at 7.)
  • facts & truths (Water boils at 100°C.)
  • schedules (The train leaves at 8.)

2. Present Continuous

Use for:

  • actions happening right now (I’m teaching a class.)
  • temporary actions (She’s living in London this year.)
  • future plans (We’re meeting at 6.)

3. Present Perfect

Use for:

  • experiences in your life (I’ve visited Paris.)
  • actions with results now (She’s lost her keys.)
  • unfinished time periods (I’ve studied a lot today.)

4. Present Perfect Continuous

Use for:

  • actions started in the past & continuing now
    (I’ve been working here for 5 years.)
  • actions that recently stopped but show a result
    (He’s tired because he’s been running.)

PAST TENSES

5. Past Simple

Use for:

  • finished actions at a specific time
    (I visited my friend yesterday.)

6. Past Continuous

Use for:

  • actions happening at a moment in the past
    (I was cooking at 5pm.)
  • background actions
    (It was raining when I left.)

7. Past Perfect

Use for:

  • the “past before the past”
    (She had left before I arrived.)

8. Past Perfect Continuous

Use for:

  • long actions before a past event
    (I had been studying for hours when he called.)

FUTURE TENSES

9. Future Simple (will)

Use for:

  • decisions made now (I’ll help you.)
  • promises (I’ll call you later.)
  • predictions without evidence (It’ll be sunny.)

10. Going to

Use for:

  • plans & intentions (I’m going to start a new course.)
  • predictions with evidence (Look at the clouds! It’s going to rain.)

11. Future Continuous

Use for:

  • actions happening at a moment in the future
    (This time tomorrow, I’ll be flying to Paris.)

12. Future Perfect

Use for:

  • something that will be finished before a future time
    (By Friday, I’ll have finished the report.)

13. Future Perfect Continuous

Use for:

  • long actions continuing up to a future moment
    (By 5pm, I’ll have been working for 8 hours.)
